What we mean by cookies
Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to store. Similar technologies, such as local storage or tracking pixels, work in comparable ways. In this policy, "cookies" covers all of them.
The three categories
- Necessary. Needed for the site to function and to respect your choices. Under Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive and the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, these do not require consent.
- Analytics. Tell us, in aggregate, how many people read which essays. Used only with your consent.
- Advertising. Measure the effectiveness of adverts for this website. Used only with your consent.

Google cookies are set only if Google tags are active on the site and you have accepted the relevant category. If you reject them, or make no choice, they are not set. At present no optional tags are active, so only the necessary cookie can appear, and only after you open the cookie settings.
Changing your mind
Use the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of any page to see your current choice and change it. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it, and takes effect immediately for future page views.
Removing cookies from your browser
Every common browser lets you view and delete cookies and other site data, usually under its privacy or security settings. You can also set your browser to block cookies, although some websites may then not work as expected.
